Effect CreationNow, finding an effect can be the simplest thing on Earth. What I sometimes do is try to rework classics, but this topic is going to focus on new creation. The first thing I do is I go into my room and put away everything magic related. Cards, coins, props, glasses, money etc. I'll come back to this later. The second step is getting yourself in the right frame of mind. Clear your mind. There are many ways to do this. I sit down and stare at something plain, a light switch. I make sure there is nothing in my line of view that could distract. I focus on nothing but the light switch. If something else drifts into my head I just think "LIGHT SWITCH!!!!!". Being able to train your mind to stay focused to one topic is a vital skill to have, and it also helps clear your mind. So, I stare at this light switch for 10 - 15 minutes. Once you get practiced at clearing your mind it will get shorter. The importance of clearing your mind is that when you are trying to create you will be focused on NOTHING else. You won't be worrying about a test score, or getting sidetracked by a funny memory of something that happened that day. Now, once you're done with that, you are ready to create. The reason I said to put away anything magic related, is so that you won't have thoughts of other magic props popping into your head to distract you. Now, look around the room you are in. I like to do this in a room with LOTS of stuff in. That way there is lots to look at. So, I look round my room, at random objects, and think either what magic I could do with them, or how I can link them to something magical. Don't block out sound, listen to the world around you. I came up with the idea of Fours a Crowd because my brother was watching TV downstairs, and I heard a person on the TV say "I was all alone, and now you guys are here. You know what they say, fours a crowd." So, say you saw a tin. There are unlimited possibilities. A penetration, a prediction turning up in an impossible place, transpositions, a tin being placed under a cloth which vanishes, the contents of the tin changing. Say it was a photo. Someone looks at something in the photo, and the mentalist reveals it. Items travel in and out of the photo. Certain placements of objects in the photo changes the expression on a persons face changes to an emotion said by a spectator. Say it was a pencil. A pencil being produced from a roll of paper half the size of the pencil, a pencil through neck, a pencil that disintegrates into nothing, a pencil that is visibly pushed in one ear and out the other. Nearly anything has an unlimited potential. Try to think outside the box; try to go for something TOTALLY unique. You don't have to, but nothing gets people like originality.
